Our Materials
Classy looking and tough as boot leather?
At Patch of Pickles, we make our insulation products from two different marine-grade fabrics.
Original – Heavy duty 915x1220d Cordura HP polyester fabric – 10oz. polyurethane backed coating for a durable water repellent finish. Able to handle Central Texas sun.
Premium – Sattler Yachmaster – solution dyed acrylic canvas - water, stain, mold, mildew, fade & UV resistant. Sattler says material won’t fail due to UV exposure for 10 years.
All our bags and covers are filled with Kraft backed R-13 insulation.
Either option will stand the test of time (and weather).
Our Pool Solutions
We have the Central Texas pool installs covered
At Patch of Pickles, we have been around Central Texas backflow preventers for more than a decade. The problem of protecting backflow preventers installed on the side of a house, supported by something protruding from the wall, and often installed in sunless alleys between houses is one that has been on repeat and an issue more and more often. The costly freeze damage to vulnerable backflow preventers is manageable and (hopefully) preventable with the proper equipment.
The Austin Pool Bag - encloses the backflow preventer in R13 insulation and that accounts for the supports. Hook and loop to seal the bag around both pipes and supports.
Side Opening Pool Bag – option for when there is no support coming from the wall. This option is not as heavily modified.
Austin Pool Bags and Side Opening Pool Bags come in Cordura material.
Our Standard Bag
It's just better material. Period.
At Patch of Pickles, we make the standards, as well. In all the typical sizes, shapes and dimensions using the best of materials. By real human hands.
We take pride in the material we use and the work we put into it.
And if you need yours a bit different. We can do that, too. A couple inches longer, taller, shorter. More grommets. A Velcro sealing opening for a wire to pass through. We know, and have seen, that there are any number of ways a backflow preventer install can get weird. We're here to try and cover ‘em. It's our job.
FAQs

Our standard covers are made of a Cordura HP fabric enveloping Kraft backed R13 insulation. PremoBond Tex 90 UV bonded polyester thread and brass grommets. These are built to last beyond the options available at Amazon or at Home Depot.
Our premium offering is a Sattler Yachtmaster solution dyed acrylic material. And all the same accoutrement as our standard bag. The Yachtmaster won’t fade during our brutal summer beatdowns. The process of solution dying means the whole thread is black. Therefore, no fade.

Patch of Pickles insulation covers were designed in response to the lack of options to insulate wall attached backflow preventers in the Central Texas area. We have developed something that accounts for most of the pool-type installs we see in the Austin area and beyond. We don’t get all of them, but we get most. And since we are making fancy bags, may as well do the regular ones, too.
We cover backflow preventers, but if you have something you would like covered, and you’ve exhausted ALL other options….just kidding, contact us with the pertinents and we will see what we can do for you.

This is a legitimate question, even though it made me laugh. Our Austin Pool Bag is a little tricky to wrap the mind around, so we made a “how-to” video. Located in “How-To”

You bet, but they are not a “silver bullet”. If it is going to stay below freezing for extended periods, more is needed. Just like an unheated, but insulated shed, eventually it’s going to get cold in there if it stays below freezing long enough.
